East Coast road trip: Sydney to Cairns in 3 weeks, what I'd change — landscape

Everyone starts a trip to Australia with the same question: do I work first or travel first? I travelled first, and it’s the one thing I wouldn’t change. Here’s what I’d do differently, with the itinerary PackLight pulled up for the East Coast and what three weeks on the road changed in it.

Before you start

  • Land in Sydney, not Melbourne or Cairns: this is where the East Coast begins and where the road starts.
  • Get an Australian SIM on day one — you’ll want data for maps, campsites and booking the boats ahead.
  • Fill the van before you book it: the per-head price is divided by three going from two people to six. Find your crew first.

What PackLight generated

“Australia, 21 days, road trip, Sydney.” The app laid out the East Coast in order: Sydney, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Noosa, Airlie Beach, Townsville, Cairns, with the transfers between towns, the nights slotted into the right town, the arrival flight into Sydney and the return from Cairns. Coherent, in the right direction, no backtracking. But a generated itinerary doesn’t know what’s worth stopping for.

What I changed, and why

1. Two days on K’gari instead of Brisbane. Brisbane is a city you’ll come back to for work, not a road-trip stop: skip it. K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) is the largest sand island in the world, 4x4s on the beach, Lake McKenzie and dingoes at the campsite. A two-day tour from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, and it’s the memory everyone keeps from the East Coast. Noosa stays on the route, two nights, for the national park walk and the beach before K’gari.

2. The Whitsundays by boat, two nights, not a day trip. From Airlie Beach the choice comes down to: a day trip to Whitehaven Beach, or a two-day, two-night cruise on a sailing boat. The second costs double and is worth ten times more: sunset at anchor, snorkelling at wake-up. And in Airlie Beach, before boarding, the skydive with the Whitsundays below: the best backdrop you’ll get for a first jump.

3. Townsville = Magnetic Island, nothing else. The town itself holds no one. The ferry to Magnetic Island, 20 minutes, and you’ve got wild koalas on the forts trail and deserted bays. One night is enough, but it’s the right pause before Cairns.

The final itinerary: Sydney (3 nights) → Byron Bay (2) → Gold Coast (2) → Noosa (2) → K’gari (2) → Airlie Beach + Whitsundays (3) → Townsville/Magnetic (1) → Cairns (3). Twenty-one days, 2,500 km, and Packy re-ordered the stops in one sentence: “replace Brisbane with K’gari over two days.”

There were six of us in a campervan rented in Sydney and dropped in Cairns. With six, the vehicle, the fuel and the campsites split, and that’s what makes three weeks on the East Coast affordable on a backpacker budget.

Real budget over 3 weeks, for one person

ItemSpent
Campervan 3 weeks Sydney → Cairns + fuel (split by six)≈ A$800
Campsites 18 nights (split by six) + 3 hostel nights in Sydney and Cairns≈ A$250
K'gari 2 days (4x4 tour, meals included)≈ A$450
Whitsundays sailing boat 2 days / 2 nights≈ A$550
Skydive at Airlie Beach≈ A$350
Meals (groceries cooked in the van + a few meals out)≈ A$500
Magnetic ferry, Great Barrier Reef from Cairns, misc.≈ A$350
Total, excluding flights≈ A$3,250

Rounded figures, excluding international flights. Solo, the same trip costs A$1,000 more: find your crew on the backpacker Facebook groups before you rent.

Four mistakes I saw people make, and mine

  • Doing the East Coast the other way in summer: from Cairns down to Sydney between December and March, you start with stinger season and cyclones.
  • Booking K’gari and the Whitsundays the day before: in high season the good boats are full a week ahead.
  • Staying three days in Gold Coast “to see”: two are enough, Burleigh Heads at sunset and you’re done.
  • Renting the campervan with two: the per-head price is a third with six. Fill the van before you book it.
  • Mine: three weeks, in March. Too short for 2,500 km and eight stops, we cut corners everywhere; and March is the end of the wet season up north, stingers and showers at Airlie Beach and Cairns. If I did it again: a full month, departure between May and October, and the rest of the trip for work.

This plan was created in PackLight, then tuned in three sentences in the chat. Type “Australia, 21 days, road trip, Sydney”, compare it with mine, and change whatever doesn’t feel like you. And if you want me to look over your itinerary before you book, that’s the point of the Tailored offer.

1

Do the East Coast north from Sydney, not south from Cairns in summer: you'd start with the stingers and the cyclones.

2

K'gari over Brisbane, and the Whitsundays on a two-night sailing boat over a day trip: those are the memories everyone keeps from the East Coast.

3

Rent the campervan with six, not two: vehicle, fuel and campsites split, which is what makes three weeks on the coast affordable on a backpacker budget.
