Lisbon in 4 days with Sintra: the generated itinerary, and the three places where the ground won — landscape

Four days is the perfect length for Lisbon: enough for the hills, Belém and a day in Sintra, not enough to get bored. I went with a plan generated in thirty seconds and one picture in mind, the Pena Palace. Here’s what the app had planned, and what I changed on the ground.

What PackLight generated

“Lisbon, 4 days, culture and food.” Day 1 Alfama and São Jorge Castle, day 2 Belém (monastery, tower, pastéis), day 3 Sintra with Pena and the Moorish Castle, day 4 Bairro Alto and Chiado before the flight. Each day with its addresses, the hotel placed in the centre, the Sintra train spotted. Clean. Too clean: a plan that doesn’t know what time the queues start.

What I changed, and why

1. Sintra at opening, Pena first, ticket booked the day before. The 8:11 train from Rossio, bus 434 or a 20-minute walk, and you’re standing in front of Pena while the tour coaches are still on the motorway. By 11am it’s an hour-long queue. The Moorish Castle next, then Quinta da Regaleira in late afternoon as it empties out. In that order the day works; in the other, you spend half your time waiting.

2. Belém in the morning, not all day. The monastery and the tower take three hours, pastéis included. The app gave them the whole day. I got the afternoon back for LX Factory and the 25 de Abril bridge at sunset, ten minutes away by tram.

3. Alfama in the evening, not the morning. In the morning, Alfama is a neighbourhood asleep with guided groups. In the evening it’s fado in the alleys and miradouros full of locals. I swapped it with Chiado, livelier during the day.

The final itinerary: D1 Chiado, Baixa, Alfama in the evening → D2 Belém in the morning, LX Factory and the bridge at sunset → D3 Sintra, Pena at opening → D4 Bairro Alto, Príncipe Real, evening flight. In PackLight, one sentence to Packy: “put Belém in the morning and Alfama in the evening”, and the plan followed.

Real budget over 4 days, for one person

ItemSpent
Accommodation 3 nights (shared Airbnb, centre)≈ €180
Transport (Viva Viagem card, Sintra train, tram 28)≈ €25
Sintra entries (Pena + Moorish Castle + Regaleira)≈ €40
Belém (monastery + tower)≈ €20
Meals (tascas, pastéis, 2 good dinners)≈ €120
Airport ↔ accommodation transfer≈ €20
Total, excluding flights≈ €405

Rounded figures, excluding flights. Lisbon has doubled its prices in five years: for two, accommodation drops to €90 per person and the total toward €300.

Three mistakes I saw people make, and mine

  • Taking tram 28 at noon from Martim Moniz: 45 minutes queuing for a packed tram. Take it at 8am, or walk.
  • Doing Sintra without a booked ticket: Pena limits entries by time slot, and the 10am slot sells out the day before.
  • Sleeping in Belém or Parque das Nações “because it’s cheaper”: you lose an hour a day in transport.
  • Mine: not anticipating the airport → Airbnb transfer. Arrived late, metro closed, Uber queue, and an hour lost the first evening looking for a building entrance in an Alfama alley. Note the exact route and the door code before you take off: it’s silly, and it’s exactly the kind of detail a generated plan won’t give you.

This plan was created in PackLight, then tuned in three sentences in the chat. Type “Lisbon, 4 days, culture and food”, compare it with mine, and change whatever doesn’t feel like you. And if you want me to look over your itinerary before you book, that’s the point of the Tailored offer.
